Great article which takes a pragmatic look at online video. At Podcastmatters Ltd we both see and fully understand the power of video, video distributed via the ‘net. However, we’re also audio advocates. At the moment the buzz surrounding online video is in danger of trumping online audio. While online video - via the likes of Seesmic and YouTube - is fun and exciting - there is much to be said for great audio.Audio is much more portable, consumable and produceable. Apple yesterday announced the option, via certain DVDs, to transfer an iTunes Digital Copy of the movie to your iTunes library. So, you’ll have the hard copy of the movie in the form of a DVD and a digital copy that you can take with you on your iPod video, iPhone or iTouch.
Once again, another indication that consumers are demanding their content on their terms; they want it in the format that’s right for them and to be able to consume it on demand.

We thought this was interesting. Not only was it a sports related podcast which topped Podcast.com’s top 10 list of 2007, but it was an independently produced podcast.
To us, this illustrates that the grassroots philosophy on which podcasting was founded, nurtured and grown pre-iTunes (circa June 2005) is still alive and well.
First, you find your voice via your passion, however niche that may be.
Second, you don’t need to be part of old media to have a successful podcast.
This second point is very refreshing, especially when you glance at the top podcasts in iTunes (the podcasts receiving the most new subscribers); the vast majority are from old media sources (TV and radio). But the Podcast.com rank for an indie ‘cast shows that indie shows can be popular.
